$11 Million Dollar Jury Verdict: SSJW Partners Laura Shamp and Laurie Speed obtained a verdict of $11 million dollars for an ex-smoker in a case against Philip Morris USA Inc. The jury awarded $3.2 million in punitive damages after finding that the tobacco company had committed fraud and intentionally misrepresented the dangers of smoking to consumers. (Jordan v. $190,000 Dollar Jury Verdict with over $226,000 Dollar Attorneys’ Fee Award: SSJW Partner Natalie Woodward and Associate Michelle King obtained a verdict of $190,000 for a young woman who had been falsely arrested in Fulton County. That amount consisted of a punitive damages award of $150,000 against the arresting officers. Confidential Settlement for Death of Infant in Daycare: Represented parents of a five month old infant, who died while attending Defendant’s daycare facility due to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), caused by placing the infant on his stomach while sleeping. The lawsuit alleged that the defendant nursing home violated the Rules and Regulations for daycare centers.

Settlement of Negligent Supervision and Sexual Abuse: Represented the parents of a child who was repeatedly sexually abused by her step-grandfather while being supervised at her grandmother’s house. Grandmother had knowledge of prior similar incidents involving her husband and other women. After the court found that the Defendant’s insurer had a duty to defend the grandmother, she settled for her insurance policy limits.
